Guidelines for Providers

These guidelines are for carbon offset providers wishing to be added to Carbon Catalog, or have their listing updated. Please read this information before contacting us about your site.


Basic Principles

  • We only reflect what's on your site. Before emailing us to say that 80% of revenue goes towards projects, or that your projects are now carbon quantified, please ensure this is backed up by your own site.
  • It's all about facts and figures. We can't do much with claims about the types of project you support, or the principles you apply. We need specific details such as names, places, dates and amounts.
  • Ratings are calculated automatically. Every rating in Carbon Catalog is determined by the information in our database. The only way to improve your rating is to provide more details about you and your projects.


Improve your Rating and Listing

For a full listing and good rating on Carbon Catalog, follow the guidelines below:

  • Provide organization and contact details. On your about page, explain whether you are a company or a non-profit and (if appropriate) your registered name. Include your address and telephone number.
  • Be open about your management. Add a page which includes names, photos and bios.
  • State clearly what % of the price goes directly to projects. The FAQs page is a good place for this. If you don't yet know the figure, provide an estimate based on expected revenue over the first year.
  • Provide a link to full financial reports. Business buyers in particular like full disclosure.
  • Explain the projects you support in detail. This is absolutely crucial. Without information on the carbon projects you are funding, your listing will appear very weak.
  • Give carbon quantities and timeframes. For each project, state clearly the annual or total quantity of CO2e to be offset, and the beginning and end of the accounting period. If you are only funding part of the project, this should still relate to the project as a whole.
  • List the project operators. For each project, provide the name of the company or organization which is responsible for implementing the project in its host country.
  • Show off your certifications. If a project has received formal certification or participates in a trading mechanism such as the CDM, state this clearly with that project's details.


Make Life Easier for Us

These suggestions will not directly affect your rating. However, they will make it easier for us to find what we're looking for. Many of your regular visitors will thank you too!

  • Include a navigation menu. Don't make us click around endlessly to find a few facts.
  • Don't change your URL structure. This ensures our links to your pages remain valid.
  • State your pricing clearly. Save us from spending time with your carbon calculator.
  • Give each project a separate page. This lets us link directly to each project's details.
  • Provide project longitude/latitude. Our maps will be more accurate, and can show satellite imagery.
  • Link to PDDs. Project description documents give us all the facts in one place.
  • Update us on changes. Help us keep Carbon Catalog accurate and up-to-date.


Our Web Robot

Once your site is in Carbon Catalog, your server may receive regular requests from our web robot. This provides us with timely updates on changes to your content.
